What Gear Does DC Rainmaker’s Wife use for Marbella? And How Bobbie Maker Got There

Her husband might be the infamous DC Rainmaker, but the real champion in the family is his wife, Roberta “Bobbie” Maker.
The former pro-soccer-player-turned-Paris-cupcake-shop-owner-turned-mother-of-three, now works with Ray at DC Rainmaker while balancing parenting three little girls and training. While most might think adding three sports would make that balance impossible, for the Makers, it was impossible without triathlon.

Bobbie and Ray Maker.
The Answer was Triathlon
In the midst of the pandemic lockdown, Maker realized that during the process of becoming a mother of three she had lost herself.
“I hadn’t done physical activity other than literally carrying babies around,” she says. “I hit such a hard wall that I was like, I’m not doing this, I’m not living like this. I had given up everything. My whole identity was gone. I’m not a competitor anymore. I’m always last: the kids are first, DC Rainmaker is next, Ray is next, the dog, and then there’s me.”
“I got to a point where I said something has to change,” she explains. “I don’t want to be that kind of mom. I think if you have three little girls, you have a responsibility to not only encourage them to do things, but to show them moms can be other things too.”
And show them she did.
Becoming a Triathlon Family
Maker went on to do a half-distance race, and then an IRONMAN, where she earned a Kona slot and raced at the world championship. Triathlon is now a fundamental part of the family culture, so her road to Marbella has been a family effort, and that really does include her three little girls.
While Maker fit in her training around work and school drop-offs, it was the girls’ job to support their mother. When she went away to 70.3 Oman to qualify and left the girls behind with their grandparents, they were just as excited Maker was feeling the strongest she had ever felt. Unfortunately, Maker brought a school virus with her to the race and things didn’t go as planned.
“When I came back, they were sad,” she says. “They were really sad for me. But if there’s a silver lining, they learned that you don’t always win. They’ve watched me pull up my bootstraps and keep going.”
They were also sad because a deal had been struck.
“Part of me going to Oman without them all losing their mind not coming was that the world championships were in Spain this year. They were also angry they didn’t get to come to Hawaii, so we said the world championships just happened to be in Spain this year, so if Mom can qualify, everyone can come, so all year they’ve been invested. They are coming to the world championships and they are so excited” she smiles.
A Maker Marbella
Maker had originally “put all her eggs in the Oman basket,” but later decided to race 70.3 Rockford and earned her slot. Needless to say, the girls were just as excited.
She goes on to explain how she is going to tackle the course, that she is naturally heat trained from living in Mallorca, and has her fingers crossed for calm water because swimming isn’t her favourite discipline. She also adds that she is healthy and, along with the Garmin 840 that Ray bought her in Kona because, she laughs, he was so sick of tech-supporting her old computer, tucked in the sides of her bike bag are big poster boards for the girls to decorate before the race.
“ This is really the first time in a long time I’ll be rolling up to a start line with those stars aligned,” she says. “There’s nothing to qualify for so there’s just no pressure. All three of my girls will be there, Ray, and my best friend is flying in from France … I just get to go rock and roll–I’m going for broke on Saturday.”
