Colucci, Baptista take Rio 70.3

Brazilians Reinaldo Colucci and Luisa Baptista reigned at Rio de Janeiro 70.3.

Colucci combined a 4th-fastest 23:38 swim, a race-best 2:10:09 bike split, and a 4th-best 1:18:35 half marathon to finish in 3:55:12 with a 1:54 margin of victory over Paulo Roberto Maciel Da Silva of Brazil and 3:36 over fellow Brazilian and 3rd-place finisher Luiz Francisco Paiva Ferreira.

Baptista put together a tied-for women’s-best 27:40 swim, a women’s 2nd-best 2:31:36 bike split, and a women’s 2nd-fastest 1:27:17 half marathon to finish in 4:29:40 with a 4:03 advantage over runner-up Romina Palacio of Argentina and 5:20 over 3rd-place Carol Furriela of Brazil.

Men

Almir Gustavo Sorbo Martins of Brazil led the swim in 23:15, which gave him a 20 seconds lead on Paulo Roberto Maciel Da Silva, 21 seconds on Luiz Francisco Paiva Ferreira, 23 seconds on Eduardo Lass, and 1:31 to 1:37 on Brazilians Fellipe Santos, Flavio Queiroga, Juan Manuel Lauro, Henrique Siqueira and Portuguese veteran Bruno Pais.

At 10km, Ferreira surged into the lead with a 1:30 to 1:50 lead on a pack of six led by defending champion Santiago Ascenco of Brazil.

By 77 km, Colucci had a 42 seconds lead on Ferreira, 2:24 on Siqueira, and 4:20 on Pais. After a race-fastest 10:09 bike split, Colucci arrived in T2 with a 1:01 lead on Ferreira, 1:35 on Da Silva, 3:06 on Santos and 3:27 on Siqueira.

Halfway through the run, Colucci led Da Silva by 2:09, Ferreira by 2:38, Iuri Josino Vinuto by 4:51 and Fellipe Santos by 5:01. After a 4th-best 1:18:35 run, Colucci won by 1:54 over Da Silva (1:18:42 run), 3:36 on 3rd-place Ferreira (1:20:56 run), and 4:05 on 4th place Vinuto (tied-for race-best 1:16:45 run).

Women

Brazilians Carol Furriela and Luisa Baptista led the swim in 27:40, which gave them a 1 second lead on Romina Palacio of Argentina and just over 3 minutes on a group including Maria Luz Poblete of Chile, Mariana Borges De Andrade of Brazil, Luiza Bravo of Brazil, and Ariane Monticeli of Brazil.

After 10km, Palacio and Baptista led by about a minute over Furriela.

At 57 km, Baptista led by 2:30 on Cravo, 3:50 on Furriela, and 4:24 on Monticeli. After a women’s 2nd-best 2:31:36 bike split, Baptista led Monticeli by 2:20, Cravo (women’s-best 2:31:00 bike split) by 3:03, Furriela by 4:36, and Palacio by 4:39.

Halfway through the run, Baptista increased her lead to 4:41 on Furriela, 4:49 on Palacio, 6:37 on Monticeli, and 7:19 on Cravo. After a women’s 2nd-best 1:27:17 run, Baptista took 1st place with a 4:03 advantage on Palacio (women’s-fastest 1:26:21 run) and 5:20 on Furriela.
