Give me five

For a Pro to go to Kona or Clearwater, that Pro now has to finish within 5% of the winner’s time to get that coveted slot. We talked to quite a few Pro triathletes and solicited their opinions about this new rule.

The Slice is built (sort of)

As the late senator Moynihan put it, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinions, but not his own math.” Okay, he said facts, not math, but the idea is the same. But now on to that Cannondale Slice.

Super Seal Mitch Hall talks

At the 2010 Rohto Ironman 70.3 California, Mitch Hall recorded the fastest age group time in 4:15:16 and placed 15th overall. Not bad for a 38-year old Navy Seal who has spent quite a bit of time in Afghanistan.

On Stories

In my role as race director I get to design the dust jacket and ink the first paragraphs, but I’ll never consummate the stories. Each year a new chapter is written as the plotlines develop depth and color.

Two notable goggles

I’m an agnostic about goggles, like a guy who goes to an Anglican church one week and a Presbyterian the next. I have no firm conviction, or, I had no firm conviction. I do now.

Spartacus, Tornado Tom, and Chrissie?

The Amgen Tour of California will feature cyclists versus triathletes on its stage-7 time trial. Downtown L.A. will host three (and a half) triathletes alongside the world’s best TTers.

A Fraser Cartmell update

Fraser Cartmell joined the Trek / K-Swiss team in 2010 and already had some nice performances for them. The Scot very narrowly missed the podium at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Triathlon, and just returned from 70.3 St. Croix.

Raelert, Dibens dominate Wildflower

Michael Raelert and Julie Dibens, 2009 Ironman 70.3 World Champions, continued their domination of the distance with record and near record performances at Wildflower.

58cm sizing comparison

When you get to the 58cm size, tri bikes diverge geometrically. Why? Because they can. The height of these bikes is similar, one to the next. But in reach, there’s more of a divergence.

52cm sizing comparison

At about 51cm or 52cm you enter a size range where just about everybody’s bikes are built with 700c wheels. Here, there’s a convergence of geometry, but a divergence in handling.

Weiss and Wurtele win St. George

Austrian Michael Weiss rode away from the field and closed out his day with a sub 3 hour run to win the inaugural Ironman St. George. Heather Wurtele took the women’s race and has now two Ironman titles to her name.

Inputs and outputs: Volume 2

What is important? What ought to matter? The answers depend on who you are and what are you’re trying to achieve. You are a tri bike’s designer, for the purpose here; good steering geometry the goal.
