From Cold Water in a Fjord to an Epic Bike. The Beautiful, but Tough, Norseman Bike Course

The bike course at the Norseman Xtreme triathlon takes athletes through a 180 km journey with roughly 3,000 m of climbing. Along the way they can experience weather seemingly from all seasons of the year. This year the athletes didn’t experience any snow, but they could see it up on the mountains. While the leaders didn’t get rained on, those further back in the field most certainly did. (And everyone got poured on during the run, but we’ll get to that later!)
For now, though, here are some shots from the bike course:

Supporters are an integral part of the race …

Some choose a more stylish support vehicle than others …

The glacier in the background offers a good reminder of both how much they’ve climbed and how lucky they were this year that there wasn’t any snow on the plateau.

As tough as the course is, for some gaining some extra seconds remains important.

After a long descent down from the plateau, the climbing starts all over again.
