Cummins, Barnard win Tri Grand Prix– Kilkenny

Owen Cummins of Ireland and Natalie Barnard of Great Britain won the Olympic distance Tri Grand Prix – Kilkenny in Ireland Saturday.

Cummins’ 14:32 gave him a 3:04 edge on the swim, and his race-best 56:09 earned him another 1:46. Then Cummins’ 35:13 run survived the 33:31 onslaught of runner-up Raul Amatriain of Spain and the Irish triathlete hit the line in 1:48:42 for a 3:46 margin of victory over runner-up Amatriain.

Natalie Barnard sprinted away from the field with a 16:20 swim that gave her a 4-minute lead. Barnard’s 1:09:21 bike split then matched chasers Marta Penalva and Vivian Mullaly before Barnard shut the door on the field with a 4th-best 43:38 10k run that led her to the finish in 2:12:49 with a 4:30 margin of victory over runner-up Marta Gallart Penalva of Spain.
