IRONMAN (Finally) Announces 70.3 Race in Lake George, New York

It’s been one of the worst kept secrets in the world of half-distance racing – the Slowtwitch Forum picked up on the new event on Sept. 3. (lakegeorge.com also reported on the race on Oct. 3.) Today, in what has been hinted at on social media will be a three-day blitz of North American race announcements, IRONMAN announced that “the village of Lake George, N.Y. and the Southern Adirondack region will host the newest IRONMAN 70.3 race in the coming year … scheduled to make its debut on Sunday, June 13, 2027.”
Race registration for the new event will open on Oct. 29, 2026 – registration and information about the event is available here.
Lake George is about 54 miles north of Albany, New York, the state capital. It’s a popular vacation spot that offers an abundance of outdoor activities within the Adirondacks. The course includes a swim in Lake George followed by a one-loop, 56-mile bike course through the Adirondack region. That will all be followed by a two-loop run course that finishes at Charles R. Wood Park, which is close to the village.
“Bringing IRONMAN 70.3 to the Lake George area has been a goal I’ve been proud to champion, and seeing it become a reality is incredibly rewarding,” said Vinnie Crocitto, Jr., Town of Lake George Supervisor. “This opportunity reflects the commitment of our local partners and a community that knows how to welcome visitors. We’re excited to introduce athletes and their families to everything that makes this region special, while creating new opportunities for our hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions. We want them to leave with wonderful memories and a reason to return.”
According to a story in the Post Star on Sept. 3, Warren County will use occupancy tax dollars ($200,000 in 2027, $210,000 in 2028 and $220,500 in 2029) to support the event, while the town of Lake George is spending $250,000 a year in order to have IRONMAN host the race. According to Lake George Deputy Town Supervisor Ed Pagnotta, that investment “will leverage approximately $23 in economic activity for every dollar invested,” the Post Star reported. The town is expecting that there will also be lots of athletes who come to Lake George in advance of the race for training camps.
Other Events in the Region
As has been pointed out in the forum, the race will be held the same day as IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman, which is about 400 miles away – one would assume that IRONMAN doesn’t see the two events conflicting. Alpha Win will be hosting its own race in Lake George in September that will also include a half-distance race. One race that might not survive the announcement of the new race in Lake George is the Tupper Lake Tinman event, which was held for the 44th time last year at the end of June. Tupper Lake is just under 90 miles from Lake George. On July 11, 2027, Geneva, NY will host IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman – Geneva is about 200 miles away from Lake George. While IRONMAN 70.3 Mont-Tremblant, set for June 20, 2027, isn’t in the US, it’s only 250 miles away – that event has sold out, though, with only “special entries available.”
