Yesterday we posted a story with my interview with Andre Lapar, the chief operating officer, Andre Lapar. Today I got to catch up with the man behind Clash Endurance, CEO Bill Christy, in one of the most famous sport venues on the planet – Victory Lane at the Daytona International Speedway.

Christy is about as passionate about the sport as you can possibly get, which comes through loud and clear in our interview today. He also talks about his vision of where Clash is going in the future, which is worth a listen, too.

IRONMAN Announces First Event in Qatar

The Professional Triathletes Organisation won’t be the only series offering an event in Qatar as of 2027. IRONMAN announced this week that the first IRONMAN 70.3 Doha will take place in “early 2027.”

“Bringing the IRONMAN 70.3 series to Qatar reflects our continued ambition to position the country as a leading global hub for major international sporting events,” said Eng. Abdulaziz Ali Al Mawlawi, the CEO of Visit Qatar. “This partnership strengthens Qatar’s growing sports tourism sector and showcases our ability to deliver world-class experiences supported by exceptional infrastructure, seamless connectivity, and an unmatched visitor offering. Together with our partners, we are committed to delivering a race that reflects Qatar’s ambition, capability, and world-leading standards.”

According to the release earlier this week:

In partnership with IRONMAN, the race will be operated by MGE – Middle East Global Events, a premier sports event organizer with more than a decade of experience delivering world-class endurance competitions. MGE has been the official operator of all IRONMAN-branded events in Oman since 2018. The company was founded by Mohammed Al Obaidani, an IRONMAN athlete himself. His deep understanding of the sport and the athlete experience drives his passion for creating exceptional race experiences. He will be partnering with Abdulla Al Kaabi, the first Qatari athlete to ever compete at the IRONMAN World Championship and founder of the A13 triathlon academy in Doha.

More On the Retirement Front

Turns out that the Patagonman Xtri race will be Josh Amberger’s last professional triathlon. Here’s part of the press release that we got from the race organizers today:

Known for his fearless racing style, raw swim speed, and candid personality, Josh’s decision to close this chapter at Patagonman is a fitting tribute to a career defined by passion, grit, and global adventure.

“Triathlon has been my life for 25 years, 20 of those as a professional,” Amberger shared. “But this year is to be my last. I’m proud to say that this weekend’s @patagonmanxtri marks my final race as a triathlete. I’m welling up as I write this—not from sadness, but from joy and the fulfilment of a dream that’s been lived.”

“I wanted to end my career on a high, with one last great battle. Patagonman is the perfect place—one of the most beautiful, raw, and demanding races in the world,” said Amberger. “It reminds me why I fell in love with triathlon in the first place.”

Canadian Olympian Matt Sharpe also announced the he will be retiring from professional racing as well.

“Two months ago, around the time I had an old injury flare up, a family friend reached out with a job opening,” Sharpe wrote in his newsletter earlier today. “They say opportunity knocks. But in this instance, it was punching me in the face. And with the remainder of my race season (and elite career) in jeopardy, I decided to stop the pumeling and submit my résumé.”

Sharpe represented Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Games and, after that, turned his sights to long-distance racing. He won IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder in 2022.

Raced Daytona today for the 5th time in 8 years, driving down from the Chicago area each time. It is a terrific race, Kevin did a great job and Bill was his great, enthusiastic self. Highly recommended.
