ROUVY Pivots on FulGaz

Last month we reported on the ROUVY/ IRONMAN partnership that saw the Czech-based indoor training platform acquire FulGaz from IRONMAN.

At that time we had the chance to interview ROUVY CEO Petr Samek, who admitted that it would make no sense to keep both platforms running. The goal, he said, was to migrate FulGaz users over to the ROUVY platform as soon as possible, but not before they could ensure the transition would work.

  1. Wow, pretty cool to see that return to investment. Although, this might just be spin, and maybe Rouvy figured out if they fired everyone a la Musk-style it might just burn down the ship they took control over. So they hire them back on and slowly transition to where they want to get to rather than panic fire everyone.

  2. Would rather see them move users on rouvy, so there can be more races/group rides with more times and users. That is the only thing keeping zwift alive

  3. Having just been on Zwift, with about 90K people already signed up for events starting next week…Zwift’s doing OK. Not great, but OK.

I think it’s pretty clear that each one of the platforms has its own niche:

Zwift nails gamification / racing, IMO
Fulgaz and Rouvy for proper outdoor simulation
Velocity for skill development / community

Why we’re seeing so many folks with multiple subscriptions. Whether that’s sustainable in the long term, especially if pricing increases too far, is another story – similar to what we see with streaming services.

  4. I wouldn’t mind just staying on FulGaz, however another point not mentioned here is all the Ironman courses will be switched over to Rouvy and removed from FulGaz. For me, the availability of those courses is the reason I signed up for FulGaz and stay on it. Though I really enjoy the other world wide courses, I doubt I will be renewing.
My impression after reading the email was, if we take away one of the top reasons people signup to the app, then they’ll stop renewing and the numbers drop too low to sustain, that will be the excuse to kill the app.
Last point, FulGaz is a niche virtual cycling app, sans the gamification, which appeals to many, but it is a bit glitchy, and freezes up too often.

  5. I think this is fairly normal in the software biz. You do an acquistion and keep the acquired product running and supported but not additional features and you advertise all new features on the platform that you want to keep building. Eventually enough users more away from the legacy platform that you can end of life that platform with no major outcry. I can’t even keep track of how many products I have worked on that were end of life’d or that my team got via acquisition that we had to end of life. Heck my latest startup I started by acquiring some product from a company that was going out of biz, and the engineering team I hired promptly forced me into killing the old one !!!

On a bigger picture over here on ST, @E-Dub acquired ST from @Slowman and transitioned all forum users to a new platform that he can continue to grow and maintain. In the process some move on, others stay and get used to the new thing. That’s just the way the world involving software platforms rolls.
