QR WETSUIT REPAIR KIT
Somebody shoulda come out with this a long time ago -- like 10 years ago. Who was running this company back then, anyway? Somebody asleep at the wheel, no doubt.
Two things it's hard to find in this sport: a good wetsuit repair shop; and a good wetsuit repair kit. QR fixes the second of those two problems with a new kit that has just about everythig you need.
We say "just about," because there is one product not included. But most of the rest of what you need is. It's got a can of wetsuit cement with a brush cap. Yes, you can buy this at any good dive or surf shop. But how far away is that, if you live in Omaha or Rapid City?
Also included is wetsuit shampoo, and some seam tape, which you affix with an iron. You also get a stick of Bodyglide, which isn't exactly for repairing your wetsuit, it's to keep from having to repair your neck from rubbing against your wetsuit.
The wetsuit glue is a type of contact cement. You apply it to both sides of an open seam, wait a few seconds for it to dry, and then press the two sides together.
Wetsuit cement is not good for filling in gouges. In other words, if all the rubber is there, and you just need to reattach one side to the other -- say, if a seam separates, or if you've slit the wetsuit's surface with a fingernail -- that's when you use the wetsuit glue. What is NOT included in this kit is filler material, if you need to "replace" rubber.
Fortunately, that's easily found at the local hardware store, under brand names like "Liquid Rubber." Any form of silicon will do. Even Shoe Goo will work (if you can still find it). This kind of product comes out of a tube as a thick, viscous liquid, and dries over a period of a few hours. That's what you use for gouges you need to fill.
For everything else, QR's repair kit is nice, especially for its price of $19.95. It's packaged in a clear drawstring plastic bag, just like the lotion and salts and foaming liquid at the foo-foo bath store.
You can buy this from your local QR dealer, QR mail-order seller, or QR directly (800-548-6369).
