IRONREADY -- WHERE TO EAT IN KONA
FROM PAT BRUG
FROM BRIAN KEAST
For pasta/Chinese, I would add "Oodles of Noodles". Up by Borders (and the big grocery store) across the Queen K. If you come up the hill from the King Kam Hotel and go straight across the Queen K. Make the first right into the shopping area. Oodles of Noodles is in the strip mall up there.
Last year the chef made me a special chicken and brocolli lagsagna, that was the absolute best I've ever had (if you know me, I don't say that very often). It was also a great place for kids!!!
For breakfast, we went to the buffet (that was basically outdoors and was part of some hotel). I can't remember the name so I'll have to try and describe it to you. As you are approaching, Kailuha from Keauhou on Alli drive, it is on the right side (island) of Alii drive just as you are getting next the heart of downtown Kailuha. It is right next to the public parking lot (right after the Catholic church). I believe it is about the first thing you come to when the parade starts. In any case, it was the best bet for families and the food was good. There was a chef who would make fresh omelettes etc... and there was plenty of variety.
I had a hard time remembering where your bike training course went, but it sounds like you are going south, down by Captain Cook etc... While this is certainly the best terrain for cycling, the pamphlet the IM folks send out specifically ask competitors not to cycle that way.

Can I make another recommendation? This is for lunch and if you don't eat a 'plate lunch' while in Hawaii then what the heck are you eating? My favorite is called 'Kona Plate Lunch' which is in a small mall right around the corner from B&L Bike. It used to be called 'Kim's' and was located in the mall on the big hill going out of town (Pay & Save Hill?) but they moved a few years ago to this location. Really popular with the locals. Big servings. My pick is grilled Mahi Mahi - all meals are served on a bed of grated cabbage with two scoops of rice and mac salad - all for about five and a half bucks. No better place to go after a visit to B & L.
